Never considered the SMS part ;) its possible android/your network is smart enough to handle it - but I've never tested it
It should be an easyish change to the Phone app - maybe someone will make the changes and submit back to android ... hell - it may already be in Cyanogen's Phone fork, http://github.com/cyanogen/android_packages_apps_Phone..
