Google owning the market gives it more credibility from a customer point of
view. Things are not that bad. It would be a major let down if google didn't
control it. Pretty much dumb. Is better when google controls its own destiny,
for better or worse.

Let me float the idea that the next logical step would be to see if
Google was interested in entertaining the idea of breaking out Market
and handing it over, possibly in part only, to a third party. Of
course they have the power to keep Market in a limbo. But how long can
they afford to do that. Perhaps it's time to talk about putting an
unsolicited proposal together to take over Market by a focused team
that drives Market forward.

Cool. Don't expect figures anywhere near Market (ahh, if only we could get

to keep their listing up to date.

Al,

thanks for info about AndAppStore. I will try to add my application there (free
version, if it is possible) and check number of downloads and compare it with
Android Market downloads.

Maybe I'll change my opinion about alternative markets and I will publish
success story on my blog ;-)

Have a good day

I'm glad to have helped you understand things. It's useful to remember that

I'd disagree with you over the alternative markets, especially as some
developers make a hundreds of dollars per month from sales via AndAppStore (and
one broke the two thousand dollar mark last month), but hey, if that's how you
feel, no one is forcing you to use them.

All the best,

Al,

you are right again.

I can blame just my stupidity, that I thought that on Market is possible sell
and buy and also that I believed that We're working hard to add more countries,
so please stay tuned! is true. Often negative experience is more valuable than
positive one and I thank for it.

With all respect to alternative markets I don't think they are real alternative
if there is not powerful enough subject in behind (I'm really curious how
Vodafone 360 Shop will work, but I don't see any other *real* alternative).

Have a good day

Tom,

I think the key thing to remember here is there are alternatives and developers
are free not to pay their 25USD and use another platform or app store.

It's true that other platforms may have other limitations, and other Android
app stores don't have the same reach, but at the end of the day you can only
choose from what's on offer, and if you don't like that you can either actually
do something about it by providing an alternative or you have to accept that
the platform is what it is.

As far as I remember Google have never said the 25 USD fee is anything more
than a fee to list apps on Market, so it's not like they've mislead you, so if
you don't think it's value for money then don't pay and don't use the service.

Al,

you are right. I think that companies that invested millions have (hopefully)
better information from Google than we poor people have.

But it is necessary to keep in mind that applications created by non
professional developers has much more than millions downloads from the market.

I believe that we are also contributing to Android success or fail (and Google
has the immodesty to ask 25 USD for permission to provide people free only
apps) and I think we should get at least some info.

Try telling that to the numerous OEMs who have invested millions (if not 10s of
millions) in Android devices, and the carriers who invest hundreds of thousands
(if not millions) in promoting those devices.

I very much doubt the kind of investment you're considering comes anywhere near

because although the Googlers do listen to the rest of us we are a very small
