Yeah... I think what you are missing is that you get all those downloads from the Android Market... because it's the only game in town. I have a site that most people would think is an App Store because I list all the apps on it. BUT... you can't download the app from my site. I have a link for downloads.. and when a user clicks it they can either scan a barcode with the phone on their camera AND then they will download it FROM THE MARKET... or they can enter their email address, and I send an email to their phone so they can download IT FROM THE MARKET.... Cyrket does the same... and so do a lot of what you are calling App Stores.

So.. even though your users are finding your app on my site or any of the many other sites you are still seeing the download from the market.

I'm all for Amazon... no matter what happens... it can't be worse than what we have now. And I've dealt with Amazon a lot, both as a normal buyer, an affiliate, a developer, and even as a competitor in the early days of the internet. Amazon is the most customer focused business you can imagine. They have always treated me well as a developer, and I'm hoping and expecting big things from them.

They pricing thing does make me a bit nervous... but Amazon can't afford to have dev's think they are screwing them... so I really think the problems will be be minor. Amazon is very conscious of their image.

The best thing that could happen to all us dev's is for Amazon's Android Store to be a rousing success.

Sincerely,

Brad Gies

I'm going out on a limb and assume that these other app stores did not have
have the size, user-base, brand recognition, and trust Amazon has. Or did
they?
Well, that may be true. And many of them were not very well executed.
But I feel that there is only room for one "main" appstore like there
is only room for one "main" social network (read: Facebook). You don't
search for your friends on Orkut or Friendster anymore because most
likely they will all be on Facebook. If all the apps are on the
Android Market, then that is where people will do their search. Amazon
can't just have 70% of the apps if they don't add any extra value that
Android Market doesn't have. If Amazon are too be successful they need
to:
- Block the Android Market by not bundling it with the devices (both
their own and making deals with other phone manufacturers).
or
- Launch a web app-store that indexes both Android Market and Amazon
Appstore

That way people either can browse both or be forced onto the Amazon
one.

We have 1.3 million downloads now on Android Market. No other
appstores has given us over 10.000 downloads. But still we do have
submitted our app to the Amazon Appstore just in case it turns out to
be a success :-)

Personally I am a fan of a 99$ fee to keep away the spammers and junk
apps, but I guess it is too late for that in the Android Market
case...
