Suppose some devices had a thermometer that measured CPU temperature, and others had a thermometer that measured outside temperature. So a program would check the device it was running on, see it had a thermometer, and have no idea what that thermometer was actually measuring. If "thermometer" is to be a well defined type of sensor, then what it measures has to be well defined.
