You're right of course, it's a codec issue, the Gallery is only the "visible" bit :)
There are other applications on the Market, such as Rawdroid, which do support RAW files. But then the problem lies with my camera which doesn't support mass storage, only WIA, and therefore such apps can't "see" it.
