There are usually different brightness settings for plugged in and unplugged. Could be a bug switching between states. Could also be a heat related issue with the processor or another component. Are you using the intended powered chord and transformer? Does the same thin happen of you plug it into a usb port on a pc? Although my Atrix restarts 2-3 times a day at random, I haven't encountered the problem you describe.
