Thanks Mike, I appreciate your help. Unfortunately I'm still none the wiser as to why the emulator is treating these 2 builds so differently.
Thankfully I never attempted to support 1.5 and so far I haven't attempted to retrofit any of the elements in the support library. But that is sure to change. But it can be painful unintentionally introducing a dependency on a class/attribute/method that is only available in some of the versions you are supporting.
