Ideally I'd be able to handle payments regardless of whether Market/Play 
was installed, but at this stage I'd be happy to just satisfy the Google 
play segment.

What kind of recurring payments do you have? Monthly subscription, in-app 
tokens?
What external server (if any) are you using to manage in-app purchaes? How 
are you finding it?
