One of the worst things about the Play market is the opaque way that
search results are presented to users.

My experience has been that old, out-of-date apps, will appear higher
in the list than newer apps. This is partcularly accute for apps that
have a seasonal basis, for example sports apps for a football or other
sporting code's season.

Apps that were made for the last season, and then so obviously
abandonded (not current for the next season) will appear ABOVE new
apps. I guess these old apps somehow score higher on the algorithm,
perhaps from the previous season's cumulative downloads plus the astro-
turfed "reviews" for the previous seaon. Current season negative
reviews do not seem to affect the ratings.

This is an area where Google are almost criminally negligent. Try to
get a response through the new "Market Support" system and all that
happens is a robotic automated reply, if is not porn or copyright
infringement they don't care.

The point is that Apps that may be current, but somehow not "tuned"
for the right keywords always appear lower in the list than the spam
apps, and so users are unlikely to continue looking further in the
list once they hit a clearly out-of-date, unsupported App in their
search results.

Why is Google so hopeless and biased in their search list algorithms
in the Play market?
