I work for a company (PaeDae) that does interstitial ads. They can be very degrading to the experience if they're not properly implemented. We've seen the best results when the interstitial window is customized to make it feel like it's part of the game/app. Also, the concept of rewarding your player/user has done really well and produces high enough CPM that it doesn't have to be shown as often and thus less annoying.
You can also just do it for free users, or users who wouldn't pay anyway.
