I would do the following: Try playing a midi file to see if that works. This will show whether the problem lies in OpenCORE or the mediaplayer as a whole.
Try resetting the device to the factory state. Then, instead of flashing the system.img, I would push the new OpenCORE libraries to / system/lib and see if that helps.
