Even though it is not officially supported, my solution to this issue
for the HTC Vogue was to run both mountd AND vold.

Vold is required for various system services, but it doesn't seem to
support certain hardware on certain kernel versions.

The right way is to build your kernel *without* sysfs-deprecated and
sysfs-deprecated-v2, then to configure the right locations in your
vold.conf

On my platform, vold ignored my configurations and refused to remount
it, so I used mountd too... you can pull down my initrd and examine it
