Do you have your audio hardware available through ALSA on your board? If you don't have audio support on your board or haven't gotten it working yet, you'll need to enable the DUMMY ALSA support.
First, in your board's BoardConfig.mk, disable BOARD_USES_ALSA_AUDIO and BOARD_WITH_ALSA_UTILS and enable BOARD_USES_GENERIC_AUDIO. Then in your Kernel Config, Device Drivers->Sound Card Support->Advanced Linux Sound Architecture->Generic Sound Dvevices->Dummy (/dev/null) soundcard. Build and retest and mediaserver should behave a lot better. This is the exact same problem I had with Android when I was porting it to my board and the above steps fixed it..
