Check out the 'frameworks/base/services/java/com/android/server/KeyInputQueue.java' file and (at least Andorid 1.6) around line 298 is where the touchscreen events are handled, you might want to put some debugging around that to see if Android is indeed getting the touch events but not doing anything with then or not getting them at all..
