How much RAM do you have? There are processes that Android will restart (or retry) if they can't run due to lack of resources (memory). A quick glance at init.rc implies that "bootanim" may not have the resources to run (after "media") and so "media" is being killed (but "media" has to run so it is being restarted (this restart is so if any of the critical software dies, the phone doesn't need a hard reboot...)
