seems MS is no longer developing IE, the PNG support will never happen and the current
'known fix' does not seem to fix it that well
for that reason, we will simply move all images to either gif or jpg (whatever is best
suited)

gif has been licensed by Unisys, PNG is a better and free standard (translucency
etc...)
in the process it is better to convert all types to PNG, there is a way to make IE
handle them appropriately by setting the alpha channel dynamically to single
transparency
