Yeah the name is really not intuitive of what it does, its really an override feature more than a "merging" feature. However I do think it should be extended to include merging (meaning that new things not found in the cartridge are used)....feel free to create a jira issue for this in the CORE project.

I've been trying out the merge location, but I was wondering about something: suppose a cartridge copies all resources from cartridge.jar!/resources and you specify a merge location for that cartridge

will new files in the merge location be picked up too ? I guess so (did not try yet). I ask this question because I was just wondering about the name: sometimes we talked about 'merge location' and sometimes we talked about 'overriding' templates .. which IMO is different

I guess the merge location is simply an additional path on which resources can be found, and this path is first in the search order - and files are merged with the rest of the cartridge resources in case they have different names
