I did some experiments and lookups regarding this, and found a nice
hint, that *might* be a cause:
As of a hint in 'Selfhtml', some browsers (namely IE) like to see the
DTD declaration in the very first line,
and ignore it, if not found there! Even  <?XML ...?> declaration fixing
the characterset before it
will cause IE to cough.
Depending on where you place it in your templates / jsp's, you might get
unwanted  /CR/LFs spoiling it!

I'm not the one telling you guys what to do, but I'm with Chad there: I
wouldn't be too fast to abandon
plain HTML-Support.
