I have generally found most UML tools very poor at modelling and handling 
object instances. 



Suggest you take a look at other ontology tools such as Protege from Stanford 
uni and specs such as OWL. Whilst this complicates the complexity of your 
models i.e. two tools and formats, I use ontologies to put the concepts and 
semantics together, then UML as a formal spec of the model.
