I do something like this (working from memory so you'll have to fix my
scripting). works for me in a number of scenarios (e.g. controlling
toshiba bluetooth acpi on my laptop)

UID=`id -n`
if [ $UID -ne ] ; then
  echo re-starting as root
  sudo blahblahblah
  exit
fi
