I finally got Angstrom installed on the slug. My solution to the root password was to wire up the internal serial port and use the serial console to set the root password. A little drastic but it works.
I hope that we can see the real fix in the releases (since I still haven't succeeded in building Angstrom I don't think I can offer to help with this fix).
