Are there any sort of comprehensive installation instructions for
kexecboot/narcissus anywhere? I noted that for someone checking out
Angstrom for the first time, there doesn't seem to be a single link to
instructions for the new image builders.

Yes, but if it fails I have to have a convenient way of debugging it,
which means building it locally. It's easier for me to just build it
locally, fix any issues, then worry about narcissus.
