Okay, so I tried doing this once more. No dice.

Here's what I did:

- got an Akita rootfs tgz (opie/task-base)
- got the Akita kexecboot from /demo/kexecboot

ran:
$ mkdir rootfs
$ sudo tar -C rootfs xvf test-rootfs-akita.tgz
$ sudo mkfs.jffs2 -o initrd.bin -r rootfs
$ sudo cp zImage-akita /media/sdcard0/
$ sudo cp initrd.bin /media/sdcard0/

(I had r20 of updater.sh already on-disk from an old installkit.)

On the z, did the OK+Power -> Update Path -> SD method.

Kexecboot sits for a while, thinks, then finally says "no bootables"

I can provide the rootfs I made for anyone who needs it.
