I did it like this:

In the css:
[placeholder-text]:not(:focus):empty:before {
    content: attr(placeholder-text);
    float: left;
    margin-left: 2px;
    color: rgba(200,200,200,1);
}

the element looks like this:
<div contenteditable=true placeholder-text="Description"></div>

it works fine!
