The documentation for this says this: "This promise will be notified upon each tick of the interval, and will be resolved after count iterations, or run indefinitely if count is not defined."
What does "promise will be notified mean"? As far as I can tell, the function you pass to $interval gets called upon each tick of the interval, but nothing happens to the promise until all the iterations have completed (if a count was specified) or cancel is called on the promise. It also says the type of the promise passed to cancel is number which must be a typo. --- R.
