My understanding is angular is not like anything else. Maybe somewhat like
ember but still different.

What I have heard over and over is that backbone has a longer curve to get
started because to even build a simple app you have to know the framework
well, whereas with angular you can build a simple app fairly fast, but the
advanced topics like directives, scopes, transclusion etc are a bit tougher
to grasp and take longer to learn. Once you master backbone it is said you
can build quicker, but you can master aspects of angular and still not use
it fully. You also start with basics in backbone and "include" libraries as
you want to do more, whereas angular bring a ton of features to begin with

I did a week's worth of tutorials in backbone and hated it then I tried
angular. I liked angular much better and it was because I am very
comfortable with html and the front end. Angular allows you to work with
html as its claimed to be "what html would be if it was dynamic" or
something to that effect.

My suggestion is like many people will say. Spend about a week with them
both and see which one feels more comfortable to you. Find some youtube
tutorials and learn enough to start a small app then try the small app in
both and see which one feels more natural
