Hi Iain,

Well, the compile phase only runs once. So it depends on your 
circumstances. If your data is static during the application, use the 
compile phase, otherwise use the link fase.
The better solution is move the xhr to a service, and deal with it in 
there, and just inject this service to your directive.
You can use the service to prefetch the data even before the directive is 
needed.
