I guess one thing you could to id manually apply the *same* filter inside 
the controller at a given point in time (when you want to save the filtered 
results).
I'm not sure if this is along the lines of what you were suggesting.

You do however end up repeating the structure of your data and the 
filtering that you do in your view.
