Yes, this is expected behavior. An isolate scope is indeed well isolated. 
For good reasons.
There are a couple of things you can do.
Firstly, you can do what Per suggested in his msg.
Secondly, you can listen do something like 
$scope.$parent.$on('$destroy',function 
() {...})
