Yes it is something that can be relied upon. However, there is no benefit 
of doing it this way. There might even be a small penalty in speed. (in 
stead of just looking up the scope, there are now some additional function 
calls), and some optimizations will cease to function.
It is better to go use the new controllerAs way of doing things. That way, 
you are forced to be more explicit where the data/functionality is coming 
from.
