It's possible I'm going about this the wrong way.

The crux of the problem (now) is that the object that's creating the open 
dialog call is (or at least should be) in a different controller context 
from the object that's being turned into a dialog.  

Maybe I should split the directive into two directives?  One to open the 
dialog and one to prepopulate when opened?  The first would remain on the 
menu item and the new directive would be attached to the dialog object...
