You should build a plunk

your issue. That will make it much easier to help you.
As you won't have a server pushing msgs, you can make a small function that 
emits an random msg every random time.

Angular.element(xxx) is the same as using jQuery's $(xxx). you should not 
be needing that, outside directives.
