I found a workaround that fit my needs by using the keypress event:

link: function( scope, element, attrs, ngModelCtrl ) {
      var changeFunc = function() { scope.callCount++; };
      ngModelCtrl.$viewChangeListeners.push(changeFunc);
element.on('keypress', changeFunc);
}
