No, there is no official way to extend the $scope. Angular uses dependency 
injection instead.  You can use a factory or a provider that provide the 
behaviour you want and inject that into the places where you need it. 

You can bind the needed scope from withing the controller, or just pass it 
as a parameter to the function you want.
Usually, I create a 'utility' service that houses all those little helpers 
for a project.
