In addition to @zlatko's answer. I think you are looking for ng-container 
<https://angular.io/guide/structural-directives#ngcontainer>. That way you 
can use structural directives, without having extra wrapping elements in 
your DOM. this will work:
<table>
<ng-container *ngFor="let i of [1,2,3,0,2]">
<tr>
<td>{{i}}</td>
</tr>
<tr *ngIf='i === 2'>
<td>I have some extra text</td>
</tr>
</ng-container>
</table>
