So you nailed the underlying issue the rest is just smoke :)
JavaScript is Case Sensitive
All JavaScript identifiers are *case sensitive*.
The variables *lastName* and *lastname*, are two different variables.
var lastname, lastName;
lastName = "Doe";
lastname = "Peterson"
