Hi, could it be that you have an aliased edge when you create the image on a 
transparent background in Photoshop?  So the "white" border is the aliasing?

I'd try fiddling with the Transparency or Matte setting when you export the
PNG to start with - it seems like it's not getting a high enough bit depth
on the alpha channel.
Alternatively it might be a problem with your image dimensions - do you
still get the same problem at a lower resolution? Can you try making a PNG
that is 1024x1024 and see if you have any problems with that? (Internally
everything gets converted to squares so there might be some problem with the
conversion process that takes place on import)
