Position Opening: Tracking Data Curator for Movebank Animal tracking has a rich history in science and conservation and an even brighter future with millions of GPS points from tens of thousands of animals being collected every year. It is critical that we manage and archive these invaluable data and deliver them to appropriate scientific, educational and political audiences. Movebank (www.Movebank.org) is a new community resource that allows individual researchers to archive and analyze their data, as well as manage the sharing rights with students, collaborators, and educators. It has long-term support from the Max-Planck Institute for Ornithology (MPIO) and the New York State Museum.
Movebank has an opening for a new position as Data Curator, helping researchers to archive their data and encouraging collaborations between prospective users. This curator will work with the existing Movebank technical team (funded by the US National Science Foundation, German Science Foundation, and MPIO) to ensure the web application meets the needs of the community, and work with the Movebank PI’s to promote and grow the application. Some of the curator’s duties will be similar to that of a journal editor in recruiting submissions from professional scientists and checking the quality and completeness of the submission. By being familiar with the data available, the curator will also be in an excellent position to encourage collaborations between animal trackers, theoreticians, educators, and conservationists. However, we do not expect this position to specifically develop a research program of their own. This position is offered at full time (optional ½ time) for 1.5 years, with work location preferred at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. The job will require substantial travel to professional conferences and workshops. Successful candidates will have experience tracking animals, working with tracking data, and enjoy networking with other scientists. We would prefer a candidate with a PhD in a related field, but will consider other candidates with sufficient experience and perspective on the field. Applicants must be a US citizen or already have a valid work Visa for the USA [sorry, no exceptions] Applicants should apply by sending a CV, cover letter, and names of references to Dr. Roland Kays [email protected] Deadline for application is 24 November 2010 _______________________________________________ AniMov mailing list [email protected] http://lists.faunalia.it/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/animov
