Dear colleagues,

I'd be very grateful if you could circulate the following advert of two postdoctoral opportunities in physical oceanography at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton within your institutions.

Many thanks and best wishes to all,

Alberto

Title: Research Fellow - Physical Oceanographer (Southern Ocean Circulation and Mixing)

Location: School of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is seeking to recruit a scientist in physical oceanography to pursue research aimed at understanding the role of sub-mesoscale physical processes in the dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and the overturning circulation of the Southern Ocean. The project will focus on the analysis of the first dedicated measurements of internal waves and turbulence in the ACC. These will be conducted during a cruise to the ACC’s stationary meander around the Kerguelen Plateau in late 2008 and will involve a suite of instrumentation and techniques, including full-depth observations of oceanic microstructure and profiling measurements from moorings and floats.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team examining the physical processes relevant to Southern Ocean circulation. The group includes an active sea-going team, numerical modellers, theoreticians and remote sensing scientists. The NOCS Southern Ocean project team will work closely with scientists at project partner institutions both in the UK and internationally.

The post holder will have a PhD in physical oceanography (or a related field) with experience in the interpretation of oceanographic observations. He/she will have good knowledge of ocean dynamics and strong quantitative and communication skills, and will be expected to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals.

The post is fixed term (3 years) and the salary is in the range of £25,134 to £30,913 per annum.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Alberto Naveira Garabato on 023 8059 2680, e-mail <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please visit <http://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk>www.jobs.soton.ac.uk and apply on-line, or call 023 8059 2750. The closing date for completed application forms is 16 May 2008 at 12 noon. Please quote reference number 2116-08-E on all correspondence.

Title: Research Fellow - Physical Oceanographer (Southern Ocean Circulation and Climate)

Location: School of Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is seeking to recruit a scientist in physical oceanography to pursue research aimed at understanding the role of the Weddell gyre in the global ocean circulation and climate. The project will focus on the analysis of the first comprehensive measurements of the physical and biogeochemical exchanges between the Weddell gyre and the rest of the world ocean. These will be conducted during a cruise along the gyre’s outer rim in early 2009 and will involve a range of instrumentation and techniques, including measurements of hydrography and currents, ventilation tracers, freshwater tracers and carbon system parameters.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team examining the physical and biogeochemical processes relevant to Southern Ocean circulation and climate. The group includes an active sea-going team, numerical modellers, tracer chemists, nutrient and carbon chemists, and remote sensing scientists.
