================================================
Know a Libertarian Student?
----------------------------------
Contest to Reward Essays about Government Parasitism
The 2010 Sir John M. Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest is underway. Open to
college students (undergraduates and grad students) and untenured college
teachers from around the world, the contest will award a total of $26,500 in
prize money for the best essays addressing a question prompted by political
economist Frederic Bastiat.
"Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state
wants to live at the expense of everyone." --Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850)
Assuming Bastiat is correct, what ideas or reforms could be developed to make
people better aware that government wants to live at their expense?
Junior Faculty Division:
1st Prize: $10,000
2nd Prize: $7,500
3rd Prize: $4,000
Student Division:
1st Prize: $2,500
2nd Prize: $1,500
3rd Prize: $1,000
The deadline is May 3, 2010. The winners will be announced in October 2010.
(Winners of the 2009 Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest will be announced next

5. VIDEO: I Own Me
================================================
I'm always scouting around for song lyrics that contain explicit libertarian
themes. I'll be the first to admit I don't have much of a rap collection, but
for our readers who are into the genre, this might be of interest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMAwb5hPyqM
NB: explicit lyrics.
The artist, "NeemaV" also has a "radio edit" (viz., the "clean" version)
available on his YouTube Page:

As long as we're listening to rap, check this one out:

================================================
http://www.thecollegianur.com/2009/09/24/libertarians-try-to-come-to-campus/
Trust a newspaper to make it sound impossible for its readers to organize a
libertarian group...
Best of luck, Danielle.

>Depression' I was inspired to combine lists into items needed in hard times.

9. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Government Finance and Spending" Plank
================================================
This issue, we bring you an exploration of the Libertarian Party's platform
position # 2.4 Government Finance and Spending, which reads:
--------
All persons are entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. We call for the
repeal of the income tax, the abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service and
all federal programs and services not required under the U.S. Constitution.
We oppose any legal requirements forcing employers to serve as tax collectors.
Government should not incur debt, which burdens future generations without
their consent. We support the passage of a "Balanced Budget Amendment" to the
U.S. Constitution, provided that the budget is balanced exclusively by cutting
expenditures, and not by raising taxes.
--------
Just as a reminder, there's a nice-looking sticker you can buy that expresses
the "abolish the income tax" sentiment right here:

11. STATE NEWS: The "Government Behaving Badly" Files: This week's Criminal
Bureaucrats
================================================
"Exposing misbehaving government employees (but I repeat myself...) to the
harsh glare of ridicule since June 2009!" These are the True Stories from the
The "Government Behaving Badly" Files:
----------------------------------
GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE EXAMPLE #1: J.R. Tucker High School's former head football
coach, accused in Henrico County of sexual involvement with two students,
appeared briefly in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on
9/11/2009. Former teacher and coach William Macgregor "Mac" Leighton initially
was charged with five felonies stemming from charges that he solicited sexually
explicit pictures from two students and took indecent liberties while in a
custodial relationship with them.
Two of the five charges -- solicitation charges -- were withdrawn. He still
faces three indecent-liberties charges. Officials said the students were 15
and 17 at the time of the alleged incidents, which officials say occurred
between August last year and January this year. A trial date was set for Nov.
17 in Henrico Circuit Court. If convicted, Leighton faces one to five years in
prison on each of the three charges.
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/TUCK12_20090911-215204/292281/
Since the government made so much hay about sexual abuse among the clergy
(which was actually quite rare -- about 250 known cases since 1985), and
government courts allowed lawsuits that ultimately bankrupted churches for
employing the abusive (whether or not the church knew what was going on), any
bets that J.R. Tucker High School or the Henrico County Public School system
will will be auctioned off in a bankruptcy sale after a similar lawsuit? After
all, there have been *thousands* of government school workers convicted of some
sexual offense since 1985!
Nawwwwww.... "The law is for me, not for thee." Go eat some cake, plebe.
----------------------------------
Seen any government employees facing justice for crimes committed while
collecting a government paycheck? Let us know about it! Send announcements
and news to <[email protected]> or
<mailto:[email protected]?subject=criminal_bureaucrats> !
By the way, you won't be able to get any reports (other than judical records,
when the crime is prosecuted) from government about any of its employees who
have been fired or disciplined for breaking the law. Government considers
criminal 'crats to be protected by the rubric "confidential personnel matter".
They claim it isn't subject to FOIA.

12. THE LIGHTER SIDE: Political Quips
================================================
Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the Governor's Mansion
in Springfield, Illinois; one from Chicago, another from Tennessee, & a third
from Kentucky. They all go to examine the fence. The Tennessee contractor
takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with
a pencil. "Well", he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for
materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."
The Kentucky contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, 'I
can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit
for me.'
The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to and
whispers, '$2,700.'
The Governor is incredulous and whispers back, 'You didn't even measure like
the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?'
The Chicago contractor whispers back, '$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire
that guy from Kentucky to fix the fence.'
'Done!' replies the Gov.
And that, my friends, is how it all works in Illinois politics!!!

First POSITIVE results of the "Cash for Clunkers" program: It's taken thousands
of Obama bumper stickers off the road!
