VIRGINIA NEWS: Virginia Libertarian Speaks at CPAC Conference ================================================ Karen Kwiatkowski, a libertarian in Shenandoah County, delivered a speech as part of a panel sponsored by the Future of Freedom Foundation, Campaign for Liberty and the Ladies of Liberty Alliance (LOLA) held on February 20th at the 2010 CPAC. The panel presentation was titled "Why Real Conservatives Are Against the War on Terror." Here's a sample of Karen's talk: "The phrase "war on terror" has been used to justify trillions of dollars in spending, hundreds of thousands of new government positions, and thousands of new government contracts. At the same time, the "war on terror" has produced very little in terms of new technology or enhanced security, has vastly increased the degree of national centralization, and has created many new permanent trees and branches in the gnarled world of federal and state institutions...." NATIONAL NEWS: 2010 Census: Snooping In Your Neighborhood! ================================================ The Census is here! During previous Census years, Libertarian Party activists and others championed a 'Constitutional response' to nosy Census questions: As the Constitution specifies, tell the Census how many people live at your address. And that's it! While our government ramps up its Census-taking bureaucracy for the decennial Census, it will be fighting low compliance, anger at the intrusiveness of its questions, and other hurdles. Libertarians have a solution that will eliminate most of the heartache for everyone involved, bureacrats and citizens alike: Get rid of the long form, get rid of the short form, and eliminate the extra-intrusive American Community Survey (ACS) -- and replace them all with a "Census Postcard". Libertarians have just one question for the Census Bureau. Since the U.S. Constitution requires just a count of the population, why doesn't the Census ask just one question: How many people live in your home? Such a Census-on-a-postcard would save time, address Americans' concerns about privacy, save taxpayers billions of dollars, and cause the compliance rate to soar. INSANITY: Obama Underwrites Offshore Drilling - In BRAZIL!! ================================================ Though President Obama opposes offshore drilling in U.S. waters, a few months ago he signed an executive order to loan 2 billion taxpayer dollars to Brazilian oil giant Petroleo Brasileiro (known as Petrobras), to expand its drilling operations -- at a huge new field off the coast of Brazil. Now here's the real clincher...the Chinese government is also loaning Petrobras $10 billion -- and has a contract to purchase *all* of the oil the expanded operation will produce. It already makes no sense. But you knew that. Here's "the rest of the story". The largest individual Petrobras stockholder is billionaire George Soros, who was one of the prime fananciers behind leftist operations to support Obama and the Democrats in 2008. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Health Care" Plank ================================================ This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position # "2.9 Health Care", which reads: -------- We favor restoring and reviving a free market health care system. We recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want, the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions. -------- The Libertarian Party once put together a comprehensive health-care reform plan, called Project Healthy Choice. Recent decades have witnessed growing government involvement in the health care system. That involvement has led to bureaucratic top-down management, rapidly escalating prices, costly regulations, the criminalization of the practice of medicine, and a host of other problems. None of these problems was prevalent prior to the time when government began to increase its involvement. We believe that government involvement is the principal cause of many of the problems we face in the health care system today. Libertarians call for a complete separation of medicine from the state. Reforms we would support include: - The abolition of all government restrictions or funding of medical or scientific research. - The abolition of all regulations requiring employers to provide health insurance coverage for employees, which often encourage unnecessary intrusions by employers into the privacy of their employees. - The elimination of government-mandated "unique health identifiers"; and insofar as government regulations have forced medical providers to use individuals' SSN's as such identifiers, we advocate the abolition of such regulations. - The repeal of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act ("COBRA") health benefit provisions passed in 1986. - The repeal of the mis-named "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA"). - The replacement of Medicare & Medicaid with private-sector insurance. -------------------------- Government's role in any kind of insurance should only be to enforce contracts when necessary, not to dictate to insurance companies and consumers which kinds of insurance contracts they may voluntarily agree upon. Individuals have the right to self-medicate. Acordingly, Libertarians seek the elimination of all government restrictions on the right of individuals to pursue any form of health care they desire. Individuals should be free to contract with practitioners of their choice for all health care services.
