2. VIRGINIA NEWS: State LP Convention Results (March 6)
================================================
A big "thank you" to all who attended the state Convention last Saturday. It
certainly was enervating to see a great group of motivated libertarians! The
first draft of the Minutes of the convention are now available:
http://lpva.com/Archives/SCCMinutes/LPVA-Convention-State-2010-MINUTES-DRAFT1.pdf
Our speakers were great. Mike Tanner and Paul Jacob were both very
well-informed on their topics and entertaining to listen to. A couple of our
members have told me they were especially interested in Paul Jacob's
'commandments'. I contacted Paul and he said he would type them up and send us
a copy soon (expect to see them in an upcoming issue of ODLL).
Show your appreciation for Mike and Paul by visiting the websites of the
organizations with which they are affiliated. Mike Tanner heads research into
a variety of domestic policies with a particular emphasis on health care
reform, social welfare policy, and Social Security. Check out his bio at CATO:
http://www.cato.org/people/michael-tanner . Paul Jacob is the President of
Citizens In Charge Foundation. See his bio at
http://www.citizensincharge.org/about-us/staff/paul-jacob .
DON'T FORGET: If you were elected to a delegate seat, please register ASAP for
the national convention:

3. NATIONAL NEWS: 2010 Census: Civil Liberties and the Census
================================================
[Courtesy of the The Lighthouse, Volume 12, Issue 11: March 15, 2010]
In 2002 and 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau provided information it had gathered
about Arab-Americans to the Department of Homeland Security. Although Title 13
requires the Bureau to keep survey responses "strictly confidential," the USA
PATRIOT Act, which President Obama renewed, provides exceptions. Public worries
about the misuse of census data may help explain the size and scope of the
Bureau's $350 million advertisement campaign for the 2010 Census.
"Widespread non-compliance, especially among those most likely to be
discriminated against by a majority, may not be rooted strictly in the
'ignorance' the ads are designed to overcome," writes Mary L. G. Theroux,
senior vice president of the Independent Institute. "History--including very
recent history--shows that the information provided to the Census can be used
against you."
Former Senate majority leader Trent Lott urged people to ignore any census
questions they feel violates their privacy, but acting on this advice may come
with at a hefty price: adults who refuse or willfully neglect to complete a
census questionnaire may be fined $100 to $5,000.

6. RETRACTION: Offshore Drilling In Brazil
================================================
OK, I admit it. I was tricked. Last ish, I said:
> Though President Obama opposes offshore drilling in U.S. waters, a few months
> ago he signed an executive order
...and:
> The largest individual Petrobras stockholder is billionaire George Soros.
However, in between a couple of grains of truth in the original Glenn Beck
story I quoted, there were some rather glaring factual errors. Check 'em out
and decide for yourself:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/braziloil.asp
All this just serves to remind me that the proper Libertarian position is not
about which nations the feds' Export-Import Bank loans money. Rather, it is
simply the fact that the government has any banking operations at all that
should generate outrage. Our position would be to abolish Ex-Im and anything
else like it, and simply be done with it!
================================================
7. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "Retirement and Income Security" Plank
================================================
This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position # "2.10
Retirement and Income Security", which reads:
--------
Retirement planning is the responsibility of the individual, not the
government. We favor replacing the current government-sponsored Social Security
system with a private voluntary system. The proper source of help for the poor
is the voluntary efforts of private groups and individuals.
--------
Generally speaking, Libertarians favor the repeal of the fraudulent, virtually
bankrupt, and increasingly oppressive Social Security system. Pending that
repeal, participation in Social Security should be made voluntary. Victims of
the Social Security tax should have a claim against government property. We
note that members of the U.S. Congress, and certain federal, state, and local
government employees, have been accorded the privileges of non-participation,
one which is not accorded the working men and women of America.
Libertarians call for a complete separation of retirement planning from state.
Reforms we would support include:
- The abolition of all government pension funds, including Social Security.
- The abolition of any regulations requiring employers to provide pensions for
employees, which often encourage unnecessary intrusions by employers into the
privacy of their employees.
- The elimination of government-mandated "Social Security Number"; and insofar
as government regulations have forced industries thoughout the economy to use
individuals' SSN's as identifiers, we advocate the abolition of such
regulations.
- The replacement of all government-owned pension funds with private-sector
alternatives.
