1. Today in History: Death of Thomas Paine
================================================

Today in History: In Greenwich Village, New York, on the morning of June 8,
1809, Thomas Paine died. The man who inspired the country to secede from a
corrupt state had six people in attendance at his funeral, none of whom were
dignitaries.

http://mises.org/daily/4438

It isn't even known where his remains are:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?GRid=2698&page=gr

Paine's life was a big adventure, complete with revolution, rebellion, youthful
indiscretion, perseverance in the face of government threats; and everything
else that made the man an intellectual giant among his fellows.

Read his story to your children tonight, and let their minds wonder.

2. Virginia Libertarians File Ballot-Access Lawsuit
================================================

>From Ballot Access News:

On June 3, the Libertarian Party sued the Virginia State Board of Elections
over that state’s rigid rules on residency of petition circulators. No one may
circulate a petition to get a candidate on the ballot for a district office,
unless that circulator lives in that district. The case is Libertarian Party of
Virginia v Virginia State Board of Elections, filed in U.S. District Court,
Alexandria, 1:10-cv-615.

There are lawsuits on this issue now pending in California, Colorado, Kansas,
and Nebraska, although Kansas has informally indicated that it will concede the
issue. The recent Idaho case won on April 9, 2010, is now over, because the
state did not appeal. Lawsuits on this issue have also won in Arizona,
California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York,
Ohio, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, in the last ten years.

By the way, if you have any interest in studying up a bit on just how insane
and unfair American election laws are, drop Richard Winger your address and $15
for a year of his newsletter, Ballot Access News.

I and other Virginia LPers have worked with Richard for several years. I
sincerely doubt that there is even one other person with as encyclopedic
knowledge of ballot access laws as Richard. Support his work by subscribing
for a year or three:

3. The Real Catastrophe: Government Meddling
================================================

Think that the current Gulf oil gusher is a unique problem?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill

Think again. The same thing happened in 1979.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtoc_I_oil_spill

All of the same techniques to stop it that BP is using now were used back then,
and guess what? They didn’t work then either. And another thing the same
malfunction happened then too, and the same rig operator was in charge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHmhxpQEGPo

There's a reason why BP is doing things they know (probably) won't work: The
government (and its media lapdog) is demanding the company "DO SOMETHING!!"

So while BP is forced to "try anything" right away, I'd bet senior management
is well aware that the well won't be stopped until relief wells are drilled --
the elements of which are already being assembled.

Oh, and all the gloom-and-doom about environmental & economic catastrophe?
Probably won't happen, for the most part. All of the same dire predictions
were made about Ixtoc, too, and actual damages were fairly light:

http://www.gomr.mms.gov/PI/PDFImages/ESPIS/3/3930.pdf

Indeed, nature is gobbling up the oil quite well, thanks:

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20100514/D9FMI8SG1.html

Word up, Obama: go home, and leave engineering to engineers, and paying for the
cleanup to those responsible. Otherwise, butt out.

Word up, to all those angry protesters: first, stop driving your cars to
protests. Better yet, stop driving your car, period. If you continue using
petrol, *you* are forcing oil companies to drill deeper and deeper in riskier
and riskier areas, to meet your demand.

Last item on the topic is this article about the shysters lining up to "get
paid". Sobering reading that says what all the panic is *really* about: a
chance to win the lotto.

5. Study: Marijuana Doesn't Affect Driving Performance
================================================

Well, so much for that often-touted law-enforcement claim:

http://www.tokeofthetown.com/2010/05/study_marijuana_doesnt_affect_driving_performance.php

It seems the most dangerous substances to use when operating a vehicle or
machinery are those the Governor sells:

http://www.abc.state.va.us/

... substances which are so dangerous that cops feel they're the only ones who
can imbibe & drive:

6. EXPLORING LIBERTY: The LP's "3.4 Free Trade and Migration" Plank
================================================

This issue, we bring you the Libertarian Party's platform position #3.4, "Free
Trade and Migration", which reads:

--------
We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political
freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably
constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic
freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital
across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our
country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or
property.
--------

Oh, I don't know. Personally, I oppose unrestricted immigration. Northern
Virginians, for example, should stay in Northern Virginia and quit moving to
the Shenandoah Valley, or Richmond. ;-)

But seriously, here are a few links that may provide a quick overview of the
libertarian position on MOVING:
