Dear Readers,

We hope you enjoy the following article published in Fredericksburg's
"Free Lance-Star", by Virginia Libertarian Matthew Simpson. Matthew
calls for all persons to be recognized as equal under the law. The
article addresses the issue of allowing gay persons to adopt.
Libertarians are not for gay rights per se -- we are for individual
rights regardless of religion, race, creed, wealth, or sexual
orientation. Even with the sanction of the majority, the government
has no place in advocating, or legally discriminating against, an
individual's lifestyle.

Let gay persons in Virginia adopt children
by Matthew Simpson
Date published: 4/14/2011

When it comes to all Virginia residents being equal under the law,
will the commonwealth's government choose what is right or what is popular?

Before April 16, Gov. McDonnell must submit his recommendation to
Virginia's Board of Social Services as to whether sexual orientation
should or should not be a basis of state-sanctioned discrimination for
adopting children in foster care.

There's always a shortage of homes willing to take in the most
vulnerable of all of us in society: the foster child. Now is the time
for Virginia to alleviate this desperate need. Gay persons should be
allowed to adopt, the same as any other citizen.

In the past, the commonwealth has passed laws limiting the liberties
of a minority of its citizens. The rallying cry for such
discriminatory legislation has come from the GOP-based conservatives,
who profess hatred toward big government for slowly taking away their rights.

However, this same group of people--who don't want government to take
their civil liberties--feel they have a sacred duty to use
government's power to continue to suppress the liberties of others.
The hypocrisy of these so-called liberty lovers is shameful.

Now is the time for Virginia to recognize equal protection of the law
for all people. Will Virginians choose what has been popular, or what is right?
