VIRGINIA NEWS: Libertarian Candidates in Virginia ================================================ Here is a list of Libertarian candidates for public office. Please support them as they work to introduce the message of liberty to voters in their district! You can donate directly to any of them via the addresses listed below, OR you can donate to both endorsed candidates with one payment by routing it through LPVA's contribution page: http://Contribute.LPVA.com Just remember to include a note in the space provided informing us how you wish your contribution directed ("split three ways equally", "give $x to candidate 1, $y to candidate 2..." etc). 1) House of Delegates district 41 (Burke, Fx) Michael Kane 9022 Fox Lair Dr Burke VA 22015-2003 (703) 322-2421 "Mike Kane" <[email protected]> http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=224585730918111 2) House of Delegates district 95 (part of Newport News & Hampton) Glenn McGuire 166 Rodeo Cir Newport News VA 23608-3837 (757) 369-0612 "Glenn McGuire" <[email protected]>. Although LP member Matt Simpson has decided to run as in independent, some LP members nearby have been supportive of him, so he is listed here also. His inclusion is not intended to suggest that the Libertarian Party has officially endorsed him: 3) House of Delegates district 54 Running as an independent Matthew Simpson 410 Albany St Fredericksburg VA 2240 [email protected] 540-429-7911 or 540-429-7902 http://matthewsimpson54.sharepoint.com/Pages/default.aspx 4) As we mentioned last issue, longtime libertarian Karen Kwiatkowski is running for 2012 US House of Representatives. Many of you are probably familiar with Karen, she has been a strong advocate of ending US interventionism abroad, and at a Rocktown Libertarians she recently described herself as an anarchist libertarian (anarchist libertarians generally advocate the replacement of *all* government functions with private sector alternatives -- see http://libertariananarchy.com/about/ ). Anyway, as above, she is not endorsed by the Libertarian Party, and mentioning her in the newsletter is not intended to be an endorsement. Her website: http://www.KarenKForCongress.com Like Matthew Simpson, Karen also wrote a few media releases for the LPVA: http://lpva.com/HTML/forTheMedia.php ================================================ 2. VIRGINIA NEWS: State Committee Meeting review, 10/15/2011, Charlottesville ================================================ The Libertarian Party of Virginia "State Central Committee" met on October 15, 2011, in Charlottesville, VA. In attendance were: Bill Wood (chairman), Marc Montoni (secretary), James Curtis (treasurer), John Fenter (2nd CD), Donna Grebas (4th CD), Hallee Morgan (proxy for 5th CD chair Dana Hale), Joe Rudmin (proxy for 6th CD chair Pat Hubble), Todd Martinsen (7th CD), Laura DelHomme (8th CD), Chuck Moulton (10th CD), and Matt Cholko (11th CD). Richard Sincere, former chairman of the LPVA (early 90's), and his guest also attended. The meeting was called to order at 1:07 p.m. The Secretary provided a proposed Agenda. The proposed Agenda was adopted after an amendment to add an item to present an award, and also a request to have a discussion of a motion passed at 2010 LPVA convention regarding Unified Membership. The draft minutes of the previous meeting were unavailable and approval was postponed until the following meeting. The State Committee made several changes to its list of SubCommittee appointments: 1) Laura Delhomme volunteered to help with the website. 2) Matt Cholko agreed to manage some modifications to the website with regard to making joining easier. 3) Todd Martinsen, Donna Grebas, and Marc Montoni were appointed or re-appointed to the Membership Development Committee; Martinsen appointed Chair of the Committee. 4) John Fenter joined the Fundraising Committee. 5) The Virginia Platform Committee was stricken from the roster. The State Committee then officially memorialized Dave Overstreet of Bedford, who had passed away shortly before the meeting. Dave was a long-time Libertarian Party member and activist a constant presence in Libertarian activities in his area. He will be missed by all of the Libertarians who knew him. The State Committee then entered into discussion at the request of James Curtis about a motion passed at the 2010 LPVA State Convention, relating to the defunct "Unified Membership Program". Curtis' motion read: "The SCC directs Jim Lark in his capacity as National Committee Representative, to notify the LNC, and Bill Wood to notify the state chairs list, of the language the LPVA state convention passed at our 2010 convention, and to notify all concerned that we will consider the same language at our 2012 state convention." This motion passed. After some discussion regarding problems with membership recruitment, the State Committee then set the next meeting for January 21 snow date 28. The location is to be The West Main Restaurant in Charlottesville. Other actions taken or items discussed included: 2012 State Convention Chair Donna Grebas mentioned that February 24th & 25th looked like the probable date for the LPVA Convention; a venue will be nailed down shortly. Chuck Moulton will be sending out a request for volunteers to serve on the Membership Development Committee; Donna Grebas remains on that committee and Todd Martinsen was added to it. Marc Montoni will add him to the committee roster & FDC email alias. James Curtis volunteered to serve with the other individuals on the Financial Development Committee ("FDC"). Marc Montoni will add him to the committee roster & FDC email alias. John Fenter volunteered to write the next fundraising letter for the FDC; Montoni to add him to committee roster & FDC email alias. (Complete as of 10/15/2011). The meeting adjourned at 3:01 p.m. MEMBERS OF THE STATE COMMITTEE WISH TO REMIND ALL VIRGINIA LIBERTARIANS THAT ALL *MEMBERS* OF THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND THESE MEETINGS! ================================================ 3. VIRGINIA NEWS: Martinsen Petition Fails ================================================ Unfortunately, one of the three candidates we introduced you to in our last issue was forced to withdraw his campaign. J. Todd Martinsen, candidate for Va Senate District 4 (Upper & Middle Peninsulas), turned in his petitions on time but was informed he was a few signatures short of what he needed to have a place on the ballot. Heartbreaking, but sometimes that's how it goes. However, Todd bounced back right away by becoming active in his new job -- he is now the 7th congressional district chairman, and he has already started contacting new prospects who live within his district. If you live in the 7th District and would like to help build the party there, please contact Todd and tell him you want to help: J.
