Title: June 2006 ACFUG Meeting
To clarify, the meeting is next Wednesday (one week from today). Sorry that the notice below says "we're just under 2 weeks away". I copy/pasted what I'd put on the site last week. I'll correct that there as well.

May 2006 recap: We had a great meeting on making the most of CFML editors, with Howard Fore introducing CFEclipse, and Charlie Arehart offering tips and tricks with using CF Studio, HomeSite+, and Dreamweaver MX. As always, the month proceeded with several <cf_Lunch> events. If you missed these events, look for more this month!

June 2006 ACFUG Meeting: We're just under 2 weeks away from the June 2006 ACFUG meeting. and this month, we'll have two talks focused on alternative CFML design approaches focused on CFCs, including the Reactor code generator, and the fourq DAO layer (used in the FarCry CMS but useful for any developer). As always, we'll have free pizza and non-alcoholic drinks and a number of great prizes to give away. All you have to do in order to be eligible to win is RSVP and be present when we select the winner! Don't miss this meeting! More details are below and on the ACFUG website.

"Introduction to Reactor for ColdFusion" - presented by Teddy Payne

Reactor for ColdFusion was coined by its creator, Doug Hughes, as an "Inline Dynamic Database Abstraction Generator." The goal of this presentation is to explain what this means, how this could benefit you and where to get started.

Teddy Payne has been developing ColdFusion applications since the release of Allaire's ColdFusion 4.0. During his career, he has always sought challenge in his professional life to include becoming a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corp. Using his knowledge of military telecommunications, supply logistics and ColdFusion, he became a government contractor for the Third U.S. Army and assisted in deploying and developing web applications in the Middle East during the war with Afghanistan . Currently, Teddy is a contractor for Pyramid Consulting working with UPS Supply Chain Solutions to assist in the development of web reporting solutions.
"fourQ as DAO Layer" - presented by Scott Talsma

CFCs approach the applications from a OOP perspective; SQL forces us to do the same from a relational perspective. Relational databases make resolving this conflict somewhat difficult, forcing a serialization/deserialization layer between the two application layers. The fourQ DAO layer makes this resolution somewhat simpler: CFCs extend the base class, specifying object properties; the base class provides all the data interaction from table creation to table modification to simple as well as advance CRUD methods.

We will examine fourQ's approach to the object/relational dilemma, how it generates the database schema, how it writes SQL on the fly, as well as considering some of the limitations of the API.

Scott Talsma is the CTO of echoeleven. His expertise includes information technology systems design, software development, Internet and database architecture and Web Applications/Hosting. He is a Adobe Certified ColdFusion Instructor, and has developed and consulted extensively using ColdFusion as application development platforms. Currently, he spends the bulk of his time in Flash, pulling in data via ColdFusion web-services. He has also taught Computer Science at the university level.
