July 2006 recap: At the July meeting we learned that, despite our having arranged otherwise, we would no longer be meeting in the Macquarium facility. Sadly, we only learned it at the last moment, so we held the social time outside the building on the patio in front (which fortunately is set up with several attractive concrete tables and benches). After that, we quickly arranged to carry on the meeting in a nearby restaurant, where several folks who had attended CFUnited gave a review of what they'd experienced and learned. As always, the month proceeded with several <cf_Lunch> events. If you missed these events, look for more this month!
August 2006 ACFUG Meeting: Given the loss of the Macquarium, the August meeting will be held elsewhere in the offices of FusionLink, our host, which is doubly appropriate because our speaker this month was also scheduled to be board member, John Mason, owner of FusionLink. He'll be speaking on "CF Server Tips and Tricks" with a focus on performance and tuning--but with a perspective from which all attendees should benefit.
As always, we'll have free pizza and non-alcoholic drinks and a number of great prizes to give away. All you have to do in order to be eligible to win is RSVP and be present when we select the winner! Don't miss this meeting! More details are below and on the ACFUG website.
The bottom line: There's great stuff happening at ACFUG--don't miss it! |

**NOTE**
Note that we will no longer be able to meet at Macquarium. We have lost our sponsor, and our backup to that person. We will instead meet this month (August) at the Fusion Link offices. The board is finding an alternative long-term location, preferably north of downtown.

Do you feel your ColdFusion server is running slow? Or are you trying to maximize the performance of your web server. There are several things you can do to increase the performance and capacity of your server. Even better, they could save you money in bandwidth and server costs.
John Mason will be speaking several server tips that people can use to speed up their ColdFusion applications.
- DNS Server configuration
- HTTP Compression
- General Network Settings
- Updating or switching out the JVM
- JVM Statistics and Tuning
- Some General Security issues
Some of these can seem to be heavy topics but they are really simple and can do a lot to help your web applications. Even if you are not a system administrator, you will want to know and make sure these types of server tunings are being performed.
John Mason works at Fusionlink and has developed web applications with ColdFusion since version 2, and has over 12 years of experience with web development since his undergraduate days at Auburn University. He has an MBA from Georgia Southern University and holds a ColdFusion 7 Advance, MCSA and CCNA certifications. |
