"Caching In" on CF Performance
Whether you think you have a performance problem or not, you ought to understand the many ways of benefiting from caching in a CF web app. And they go way beyond the common solutions of query caching, template caching, and page caching. Whether you know what those mean or not, come learn about more than a dozen ways to leverage, control, and monitor caching in CF.
You may know about (or at least have heard of) query caching (CachedWithin/CachedAfter) and template and trusted caching (in the Admin), as well as shared scope caching, or perhaps you've tried CFCACHE or CFSaveContent, and others. In broad terms, a cache is a way to reuse something that's expensive to obtain the first time.
But did you know that there are more than a dozen ways to do and control caching in CF apps and related operations, some set or controlled in code, others in the Admin? And have you really understood any features you have used? There are often conflicting recommendations offered, and it's easy to make a mistake and find a change makes things worse. You may also find that some things don't work as expected. There are also aspects of caching outside of CF (database, web server, and browser) that you should keep in mind.
Whether you're a relatively new or even an experienced CF developer or administrator, come join veteran CF developer and frequent speaker Charlie Arehart as he tours you through the world of improving performance in your web applications by way of caching. Charlie Arehart
A veteran ColdFusion developer since 1997, Charlie Arehart is a longtime contributor to the ColdFusion community and a recognized Adobe Community Expert. He served as tech editor of the ColdFusion Developers Journal until 2003 and was co-author of the CFMX Bible. Charlie started in IT in 1982 working in mainframe databases, and moved to the web and CF in 1997. A certified Advanced CF Developer and Instructor for CF 4/5/MX, he's frequently invited to speak to developer conferences and user groups worldwide. Charlie is now an independent contractor providing high-level troubleshooting and tuning assistance as well as training and mentoring for CF teams. He lives in Alpharetta (GA), where he served until recently as president of the Atlanta CFUG.
