Seems I posted this initial message to the wrong group a week ago. I got a Spanish bounce message, which made me overlook that.
In the mean time I got quite some feedback via Twitter https://twitter.com/svg/status/972563532326821888 I'm still looking for extensive examples though. Especially large inventories of at least several hundreds of hosts, dozens of group, and a deeply nested hierarchy. Or, perhaps why and how you avoid that, as that becomes hard to manage. My focus is, more specifically, how you manage multiple sets of variables in such an inventory. In my experience, managing group_vars files becomes very cumbersome, and impossible to keep a good overview. What are the problems you get, when doing inventory at a larger scale? Thanks! I have some ideas of myself on how to manage the Inventory, but want to some reality checks, to avoid doing thinking in my own use cases, and limited view points. This, especially for larger inventories - where you really get to manage cattle and not pets - which might mean 100's of hosts, and at the very least several dozens of groups. How you define your variables within this structure, and to what extent you go to several layers of child groups are especially important here. So, if you have anything to share on that matter, and perhaps can share some - anonymized - dump of such an inventory, I would be extremely grateful. You should be able to export a json dataset with with ansible-inventory, introduced in 2.4. Thanks!
