Thanks a lot for looking into this. I reached out to AWS and they explained 
that the UserData is encrypted for OpsWorks instances. That is why we are 
seeing the garbled text that is causing the issue. I asked if there was a 
way to prevent this from happening but have not heard back yet. Im waiting 
for their response. In the mean time we have reverted back to version 1.7


BTW. Why is it that this does not happen in 1.7 but does in 1.8 and above? 
Does it have to do with the version of Jinja 1.7 uses? Thanks again for
